St. Louis, Mo., November 9, 2007 – The Washington University men’s soccer team had six student-athletes earn All-University Athletic Association (UAA) first-team, second-team, or honorable mention recognition, as announced by the conference office on Friday. A pair of senior defenders, Onyi Okoroafor and Elie Zenner, were first-team selections.
Freshman Harry Beddo, senior defender Matt Hemphill and sophomore John Smelcer earned second-team honors, and senior forward Marshall Plow received an honorable mention.
Okoroafor and Zenner were crucial pieces of a Washington U. defensive unit that allowed just 12 goals in 17 regular season contests in 2007. Washington U. finished the regular season with a 13-4-2 overall record, 4-1-2 in UAA contests, and shut out its opponent in 11 of its 19 contests. The Bears finished third in the UAA standings.
Zenner proved to be an offensive threat in addition to being a shutdown defender, scoring a goal to go along with four assists. Okoroafor began the season starting in the midfield, but injuries led to his being switched to back line, a role in which he flourished. Zenner was also named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA College Division Academic All-District VII team. He repeats as an all-UAA first-team selection, while Okoroafor was a member of the conference’s second team in 2006.
Beddo has been the Bears’ most proficient scorer this year, finishing the regular season with nine goals, two assists, and 20 points. His goal and point totals lead WU in just his first season on the Danforth Campus, and his nine scores rank fifth among all UAA athletes. Beddo has also recorded a team-best four game-winning goals, none of which were more crucial than his double-overtime score in the Red and Green’s 1-0 win over No. 5 Case Western Reserve University on Oct. 28.
Hemphill joined Zenner and Okoroafor in the Bears’ starting backfield. He was named the UAA Athlete of the Week on Sept. 1, and was also selected to the D3Kicks.com Team of the Week on Sept. 2. Hemphill earned first-team all-UAA honors in 2006, and has twice been an academic all-UAA selection.
Smelcer has started all 19 of the Bears’ games in goal, recording eight shutouts. He boasts a 0.64 goals against average (GAA), and has made 60 saves so far this year, for a save percentage of .833. His 0.64 GAA would stand as the fifth-best single-season mark in Washington University history, and was second in the UAA this season. Smelcer was tabbed as the UAA Rookie of the Year in 2006.
Plow earns all-UAA honorable mention honors for the second-straight season. He had a hot start to the year, leading the team in scoring through the first four weeks of play. Plow ended the regular season with four goals and an assist.
The No. 20 Washington University men’s soccer team received an at-large berth into the 2007 NCAA Championship Tournament. The Bears (13-4-2, 4-1-2 UAA) will open tournament play against Carthage College in Whitewater, Wis., on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1:30 p.m.
