Donaldson Brace Sinks Lions
St. Louis, Mo. (May 22nd, 2011)- A festive atmosphere was on hand to greet the Lions at the Tony Glavin Soccer Complex on Sunday night but Colorado’s Julian Donaldson stole the show.
The St Louis Lions sporting their new green and white hooped uniforms came out fired up and ready to play. The Lions were looking sharp and the supporters section was into the game early when a costly mistake in the backfield led to the first goal of the game and a straight red cad to Lions keeper Israel Becerra.

Lions finally got our season going!
Big win yesterday as they dispatched Springfield 6-1, with some great goals.
Gavin Smith's goal from the half way line could make goal of the week highlight, along with a couple others with great diagonal combination passing from side to side to open the Demise defense.
I suppose the lads got inspired by Barca's play, or could it be Tony's halftime talk "you get your stuff together or else..." , or could be both!!
Next Saturday off to KC who did a number on Des Moines knocking them out of USOC.

Lions Deny Brass’ Late Rally
Saturday, June 4, 2011
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The St Louis Lions earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory against cross-state rivals the Kansas City Brass on a steamy evening at the Overland Park Soccer Complex. Dan Meagher scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Lions in the 75th minute.
The Lions stormed out of the gates early andscored in the first five minutes of the game when forward Henrique Suosa chased down a ball on the right side and found Pat Kelly at the near post. Kelly’s goal was his first of the season.
Later in the half the Lions went up 2-0 when Suosa buried a driven cross by Gavin Smith. Smith stole the ball from the Brass midfield and charged past the defender leading to the cross. The Lions continued to put pressure and had numerous opportunities in the first half but failed to add to their lead. Kelly was denied on a point-blank header late in the half and Smith missed the goal by inches late in the half.
In the second half the Lions continued to attack, but the Brass would not give up and pulled a goal back when Brian Harris scored from a free kick just outside the Lions penalty area in the 67th minute. The Brass would then find an equalizer six minutes later when Ricardo Yeverino outpaced the Lions defense on a through-ball from Ryan Hunter.
But the Lions retook the lead thanks to the scrappy play of Kelly, who controlled on the right side of the midfield and beat his defender one-on-one. Kelly then served the ball to the back post to a camped out Meagher who headed home to give the Lions a 3-2 victory.
The Lions return home next weekend to face theKansas City Brass on June 11thon St Louis Soccer Day. For Tickets visitwww.stllions.com or call 636-939-5151.

LIONS CAPTURE FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON AT HOME OVER THE MENACE
St. Louis, MO, Thee St Louis Lions gained their first win of the season in a thrilling come from behind 2-1 victory over the Des Moines Menace. The Lions returned home for their Home Opener after spending the early part of the season on the road.
Earlier in the season the Menace got the upper hand against the Lions with a convincing 4 to 1 victory in Des Moines. Des Moines opened the scoring in the first 5 minutes when Brent Kallman had a long throw-in deep into the Lions box. The ball bounced off the Lions defenders and fell to the feet of Logan McDaniel who slipped the ball into the net for an early 1-0 lead for the Menace.
Things did not look good early for the Lions but they battled thru the heat and the pressure of the Menace attack to get to halftime down by only a goal.
“The early goal was disappointing but we knew if we just stuck to our game plan we would break thru and tie the game.” said Tony Glavin Lions Head Coach.
In the 61st minute the Lions found the equalizer. Defender Pat Kelly intercepted a long outlet pass by the Menace and found Lions forward Jamie Skillen on the right side of the Menace goal box. Skillen settled the ball with a great touch and crossed the ball to Gerrard John-Williams parked in front of the goal for the spectacular volley. The goal was John-Williams first as a St Louis Lion.
“I am very pleased for Big G getting on the score sheet. He has been working hard and it finally came to him.” said Glavin “His goal was an excellent finish. We just built on the momentum from there.”
Glavin was right with the momentum swung in the Lions favor and the St. Louiligan’s really getting the crowd into the game the Lions struck again.
In the 78thminute Dean Lovegrove scored the game winner. Lovegrove had pushed forwards from his midfield position near the top of the Des Moines goal box. The ball was played into Lovegrove played the ball up with his chest and it fell between the Menace defenders legs. Lovegrove toe poked the ball forward towards goal and then chipped the ball into the far post pas the charging Menace keeper.
“This was a really good win for us today. We kept ourselves in it and worked hard for the victory. This is a well deserved victory” said Glavin.
The victory broke a 12 game winless streak against the Menace,
Before the game the Loins players all wore t-shirts saying “4 U Casey” in honor of Casey Blick, one of the founders of the Lions Supporter Club the St Louligan’s. The Lions players also made a donation to the Siteman Cancer Research Center in Casey’s honor.
The Lions will hit the road this Thursday to take on the Springfield Demize on Thursday evening but return home on Saturday 5:00pm in the return portion of a home and home series with the Demize. Tickets can be purchased by calling 636.939.5151 or online at www.stllions.com
