UMSL Women

Postby no buddy » Fri Dec 12, 2008 6:58 am

Riverwoman. A big, burly woman who works on the river. If you remember the male figure as the mascot, then try to feminize it. Not too pretty. Then again who gives a S#%* what a mascot looks like. Just win, baby! That was the hard part. Changing the mascot was easy, and no one put up a fight. No one on campus even knew there was a mascot, much less an athletic program. They missed out on some quality soccer thru the 70's and 80's. Both men's and woman's. 25 year run in playoff appearances and a number of final fours. Not to mention a few pretty good players. The program misses Big 'D'.

It has to be hard to recruit a large number of good players to that campus. There is absolutely no college atmosphere there. There's no campus life, the campus itself isn't the nicest, etc., etc. I'm not trying to offend the people at UMSL, but let's be realistic. If you're a kid from St. Louis being recruited by d2 schools, let's say UMSL, Truman State, Drury, and Rockhurst it's gonna be hard for UMSL to compete. Drury, Truman, and Rockhurst have by far nicer campuses, plus you're getting away from home. Drury and Rockhurst have more money in scholarships and more support from their administrations than UMSL. Truman has a better academic reputation than UMSL. It's gotta be hard for Coach King.

Could the economy work to UMSL's advantage?

More families deciding that the son or daughter should stay close to home for a year so that they can afford to send them to college.

A couple of weeks ago your soccer scholarship would have paid for 6 tanks of gas.

Oh sorry, that is right we used that on books.

So......what exactly does a feminine Titon look like? I'm sure it's MUCH better than a burly riverwoman?

They got rid of a perfectly good name.

Has anyone heard anything about who they are interviewing for the women's job or when they will hire the new coach? They need to hire someone soon so they can start recruiting for next year.

The UMSL athletic program is in shambles, they are still without an Athletic Director as well. Beth Goetz was basically run off by the old athletic director who has been subsequently fired himself. Thom Champion, the iterim coach, has been a disaster, as apparently several of the current players have left the program, or are considering leaving. It's amazing the the current UMSL administration, would let the program deteriorate like it has.

It is still a commuter school and a commuter school in this competitive environment will not survive in soccer. They can only recruit locally and their are just too many options out their. I think folding their tents at this stage is the only logical solution. They thrived when STL produced the very best players in the country across the board, that is no longer the case. Sir Alex couldn't save that program. The enviroment has shifted, times change, they should hang it up.

I find it amusing that the public's view of the program is horrendous, but the school keeps on keeping on. It would be interesting to read the list of names and their resumes, for any coach that feels they could initiate some sort of change at UMSL. You'd think losing to SIUE enough times would evoke something, or even their yearly GLVC finishing spot in the bottom quarter of the group.

Jaguar12--I'm thinking you're right on the school hanging it up--It seems to be a three-ring circus act. Maybe they need Chip Rosenbloom's cash to help out the cause?

Have they hired the women's coach yet at UMSL? I haven't heard much about who they interviewed or if Champion was taking the job.
