[SOUTH AFRICA-USA REPORT CARD] Soccer America's Mike Woitalla grades the U.S. players' performances in their 1-0 win over South Africa on Wednesday in Cape Town.
One of five debutants, 17-year-old Juan Agudelo orchestrated and finished the goal that ends the year on a high note for the USA.
In their brief appearances, Agudelo and Mikkel Diskerud (20 years old) showed glimpses of skill that give American fans -- who might have dozed off before the duo arrived were it not for the vuvuzela noise -- something to look forward to.
USA
STARTERS
Rating/Player (Club/Country) GP/G
6 Brad Guzan (Aston Villa/ENG) 19/0
The captain smothered two short-range efforts and handled all but one cross – when he slipped -- securely.
5 Eric Lichaj (Aston Villa/ENG) 2/0
The right back relied too much on fouls. One of his forays up the flank led to a shot on goal (from Robbie Rogers in the 22nd minute).
5 Clarence Goodson (Brondby/DEN) 17/2
Looked shaky early on when he passed to an opponent but settled into a solid performance. Drew a free kick on the other end and served the ball to Juan Agudelo that started the goal sequence.
6 Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls) 1/0
The only of the five debutants who got a start, he handled his central defensive duties smoothly. Made crisp, accurate passes.
5 Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA) 36/2
This squad’s most experienced player, who has shown attacking skills from the left back position, stayed back but for an early venture that ended with an over-hit cross.
7 Alejandro Bedoya (Orebro/Sweden) 6/0
The shining light in a moribund midfield; sparked movements down the right from the get-go.
5 Brian Carroll (Columbus Crew) 8/0
Part of the defensive midfield duo (with Logan Pause) that kept Bafana Bafana from attacking much down the middle, Carroll offered little on the attacking side.
5 Logan Pause (Chicago Fire) 6/0
The other part of that central midfield that failed to find any rhythm or possess the ball for more than fleeting periods.
6 Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew) 13/1
In such a defense-minded lineup, the left-sided midfielder’s efforts stood out a bit – hitting the USA’s first shot and juking two defenders before sending a promising ball across the middle before halftime.
4 Eddie Gaven (Colombus Crew) 8/0
With only one forward, much more was needed from the central attacking midfielder. His one shot went straight to the keeper. Set up Rogers’ shot, but didn’t connect with the striker.
4 Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake) 11/0
Besides Bornstein, the only holdover from last summer’s South Africa trip, Findley went yet another game without scoring. Granted, he was stranded alone up front, but he misplayed balls he shouldn’t have.
SUBS
Rating/Player (Club/Country) GP/G
5 Teal Bunbury (Kansas City Wizards) 1/0
Hit one of USA’s rare shots on goal.
3 Jonathan Spector (West Ham United) 28/0
Gave away balls the South Africans could have exploited.
8 Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls) 1/0
A dream debut for the teen, who showed promise when he evaded two South Africans before launching a cross – then scored the winner, which he created with a pass to Mikkel Diskerud and finished nicely.
5 Nat Borchers (Real Salt Lake) 3/0
Not troubled by Bafana Bafana’s predictable attack.
7 Mikkel Diskerud (Stabaek/NOR) 1/0
The way he controlled and released the ball under pressure to assist on Agudelo's goal was magnificent. Helped out on defense in waning minutes to hold lead.
NR Gale Agbossoumonde (Estoril/POR) 1/0
An 87th minute sub.
(Ratings: 1=terrible; 5=average; 10=brilliant.)

Men’s Finalists for MAC Hermann Trophy Announced
Santa Barbara , Calif. – The Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and a first-team All-Big East All selection comprise the three finalists for the 2010 Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy, the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer. The finalists were determined in voting by Division I men's head coaches at institutions who are members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Will Bruin from Indiana , Darlington Nagbe from Akron , and Colin Rolfe from Louisville are the three finalists for the award. The trio will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in downtown St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 7, for a news conference, where the winner of the award will be revealed (approximately 7 p.m. EST ). A banquet at the Club that evening will feature the formal presentation of the prestigious crystal soccer ball trophy to the winner.
Bruin, a junior forward from St. Louis , Mo. , was the 2010 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. He appeared in all 20 games and helped Indiana reach the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Bruin led the Hoosiers in scoring with 41 points on 18 goals and five assists. He ranked third in the nation in points and points per game (2.05). Bruin posted three game-winning goals during the season. He earned NSCAA National Player of the Week honors Oct. 13 after leading IU to an upset of No. 11 Creighton.
Nagbe, a junior forward from Lakewood , Ohio , has started all 23 games and helped Akron reach the College Cup for the second consecutive season. This season, he has posted 27 points on seven goals and 13 assists. Nagbe was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year. He earned NSCAA National Player of the Week honors Sept. 8. Nagbe is the third consecutive Akron player to be voted a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy (2008 runner-up Steve Zakuani and 2009 winner Teal Bunbury).
Rolfe, a junior forward from Canton , Mich. , has started all 22 games and has led Louisville to a No. 1 ranking and the program’s first College Cup. He leads the team in scoring with 25 points on nine goals and seven assists. Rolfe earned first-team All-Big East honors. On Dec. 4, he scored two goals in a victory over UCLA that earned the Cardinals a trip to the College Cup. Rolfe was a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist last year and becomes the first player in Louisville history to be voted a finalist.
The MAC has honored the top player in collegiate soccer since 1986. Some of the biggest names in soccer, such as Mia Hamm and Claudio Reyna, have won the award. For a complete list of past winners, go to www.mac-hermann-trophy.org.

I been around gallagher for over 15 years, my kid has come and gone from the club after a long honorable career and I'm proud to be associated with this club. I'm not a Koolaid drinker, don't go the meetings but I'm on their email list and get updates. this one caught my eye as something to put out there and say that to all the people bash SG and say they aren't producing like they used to or St. Louis isn't producing yea yea. read this awesome recap! great job by Kip and Kalish for the modern era and great job to Tommy and those at WCR for producing these fine results http://slsgsoccer.com/Multimedia/News/t ... fault.aspx

I guess playing 2 high school sports didn't hurt him.
Something to be remembered when being told you must play soccer only.

I dont care what any of them say, but playing basketball as well as soccer keeps you in great shape, works with speed and agility, helps the leaping leg muscles, basketball like soccer requires vision on the court / field, and probably most important, keeps the player mentally fresh and eager to compete in both sports vs the yr long grind of one sport over and over

I couldn't agree more and my kids love basketball as well. I see improvement with footework each year with the constant change of direction and the constant jumping. I have seen a payoff for my daughter as a keeper because her hands are stronger and she understand the importance of catching and holding the ball.
Let the kids play

St. Louis Scott Gallagher was represented well today with 3 out of the 54 players selected in the 2011 MLS Superdraft. SLSG's Will Bruin (Indiana University) was selected in the first round, the number 11 pick overall by the Houston Dynamo. SLSG's Cole Grossman (Duke) was the #28 pick and is going to the Columbus Crew, Goalkeeper Joe Willis (Denver)! was drafted #50 by DC United.
After the Salgado Surprise #1 pick sunk in, the story of the draft was the record number of players from the University of Akron that were selected in the first round -> SEVEN!
Wayne Rooney's little brother John was the #25 pick and will team up with SLSG's Tim Ream at RedBull New York.
Congrats to Will, Cole and Joe on this tremendous accomplishment!

Congrats to Tim Ream for playing 90 minutes and for being involved in the build up that led to the foul on the PK goal! The USMNT came from behind to draw 1-1 with Chile in their opening match of 2011.
