Congratulations to the both SLSG U16 Elite and U17 Elite for winning the Midwest Developmental League, part of US Club Soccer’s National Premier Leagues (NPL). Both teams are coached by Pat Barry and assisted by Andy Cooper.

The U16s won 1-0 on a 67th minute breakaway by Kyle Gardner vs Chicago Fire. The U17s went up 1-0 early on a goal by Carson Pryor. They gave up a goal in the 45th and then Mike Heffernan a late corner kick head ball for the win (also vs Chicago Fire). Nate Griffin stopped a PK in the 50th minute.

The teams will now compete for a National Title at the National Premier Leagues Champions Cup on July 27-31 in Waukegan, Illinois.

that nutmeg on the keeper from a bad angel type of goal happens all the time and nothing can be more frustrating to have it happen to you.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (July 12, 2012) – Chicago Magic and St. Louis Scott Gallagher (Mo.) each claimed a pair of championships at the Midwest Developmental League Playoffs, held July 6-8 at Libertyville Township Soccer Complex in Libertyville, Ill. Sockers FC also earned a championship at the National Premier Leagues (NPL) event, which included a Player Development Program (PDP) on July 7.

U-13 Champion: Chicago Magic
U-14 Champion: Chicago Magic
U-15 Champion: Sockers FC
U-16 Champion: St. Louis Scott Gallagher (Mo.)
U-17/18 Champion: St. Louis Scott Gallagher (Mo.)

With their victories, the five teams advance to the inaugural NPL Champions Cup, where NPL national championships will be awarded. That event will be held July 27-31 at Waukegan Sports Park in Waukegan, Ill.

The top eight teams in each age group based on the regular season advanced to the Midwest Developmental League Playoffs, which was the culmination of a season which began back in August for U-13 and U-14 teams and March for U-15, U-16 and U-17/18 squads.

Having already claimed the U-13 crown in early action on Sunday, Chicago Magic needed penalty kicks to defeat cross-town rival Chicago Fire Academy in the U-14 final following a scoreless draw in regulation. The 5-4 victory in the shootout gave Chicago Magic its second championship of the day.

The U-15 division saw Sockers FC come from behind to win the championship 4-3 over Chicago Fire Academy, which led all clubs with four finalists but was unable to claim a title.

St. Louis Scott Gallagher (Mo.) edged out the Chicago Fire Academy 2-1 in a highly competitive U-16 final match. The club added its second championship of the day with a penalty shootout over Chicago Fire Academy in the U-18 division.

“The club basically told us right at the beginning that NPL is the most important thing now and we want to see you get to the Playoffs. You can’t ask for a better finish for both of these groups,” said St. Louis Scott Gallagher (Mo.) coach Pat Barry of the club’s two champion teams.

On Saturday, 36 of the top players born in 1999 from around the league gathered for training as the league hosted a PDP. The players participated in technical training and high-quality 11v11 games. The coaching staff for the PDP included Mike Litvack (FC 1974) and Derrick Clanton (Eclipse Select).

Also at the PDP was U.S. Soccer Technical Advisor Tim Regan, who was in attendance to scout players for potential inclusion in future U.S. National Team Camps.

“This group in particular is the age group for our upcoming U-15 Boys National Team pool and throughout the course of the next 12 months, we will be bringing in 1999s to National Team Camps to view them,” said Regan. “Before we bring them in, we scout them and events like this are a good way for us to see a different pool of kids that we don’t see on a normal basis.”

US Club Soccer’s Player Development Programs (PDPs) are regionally-based identification and developmental programs conducted within the id2 Program umbrella and centered around the National Premier Leagues in specific geographic areas.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUES:

US Club Soccer’s National Premier Leagues have been created to provide a national competitive developmental platform:
focused on long-term player development;

for the country’s top soccer clubs, allowing consistent, meaningful high-level games appropriately scheduled with higher training-to-game ratios;

that allows players to be scouted and evaluated by U.S. Soccer National Staff and Technical Advisors;

that is designed and structured by the clubs, based on the needs of the clubs;

using international rules of competition;

that provides an avenue for qualification for the NPL Champions Cup.

The NPL is an important component of US Club Soccer’s 10-year vision to refine the landscape for competitive youth soccer. This vision recognizes that:
properly-structured youth soccer clubs are the vehicle through which player development does and must occur in the United States.

clubs should play in leagues that provide meaningful games, allow establishment of the proper training-to-game ratio, and eliminate calendar congestion.

National Premier Leagues, as well as the best clubs, should be integrated in US Club Soccer’s id2 National Identification and Development Program, include Player Development Programs (PDPs) in select local markets, and work closely with U.S. Soccer staff regarding player identification, and player and coach development.

St. Louis Scott Gallagher MO Academy opened up US Soccer Development Academy Finals Week play on Tuesday night in Houston with a resounding 3-0 victory over the PA Classics, last year's U-16 finalist. "It was a great way to start Finals Week for our squad, and the boys truly earned the victory," commented SLSG MO Head Coach Tim Leonard. "We made a great effort to combat their formation and push numbers forward, and it paid off for us in the second half."

Though the first half was scoreless, SLSG MO had outshot PA Classics 8-2, with a 3-0 advantage of shots on goal. SLSG MO finally broke through at the 11 minute mark of the second half when Tommy Barlow converted a PK (after Austin Panchot was fouled in the penalty box) for a 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, Mark Segbers converted a rebound of a shot by Barlow for a 2-goal lead. Brett Hodges completed the scoring at the 36 minute mark of the second half on an 18-yard strike of a rebound as well. Jake Leeker went on to earn the shutout in goal, while the PA Classics were reduced to few offensive opportunities. "It was a total team effort on both sides of the ball," remarked Leonard. "Hopefully we can carry the momentum with us into our match on Thursday night."

SLSG MO's opponent on Thursday at 8PM, the Crew Soccer Academy Wolves (MI), tied DC United 1-1 in their opening round match, leaving SLSG MO atop the group standings with three points and a goal differential of plus-3.

The St. Louis Scott Gallagher MO Academy team took one step closer to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Finals Week Championship with a resounding 4-1 victory over the Crew Soccer Academy Wolves (MI) tonight at the Houston Amateur Sports Park.

The first half started with end-to-end action, with both keepers tested early while the teams settled in. The Crew continued to pressure, forcing SLSG on its heels and not allowing them possession. The Crew struck first with a 25 yard blast from forward Ahinga Selemani and opened a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. Just when it appeared the Wolves would go into half with the lead, SLSG forward Nick Jones received a ball over the top of the defense, outran the defender and slid a shot past the diving keeper for a 1-1 tie just minutes before the haltime whistle. "The boys came into halftime with a lot of confidence from the late goal by Jones," remarked SLSG MO Head Coach Tim Leonard.

SLSG MO started the second half refreshed and ready to pressure, creating opportunities while not allowing the Crew to get untracked. They took the lead for good in the 46th minute of the match when defender Jason Pesek slotted a ball to Austin Panchot, who dummied a defender and slid the ball back to Pesek who volleyed a ball into the box. The Crew keeper couldn't handle the rebound and forward Tommy Barlow was there to place it into the net for a 2-1 lead. The goal created another gear and the team's pressure increased even more, leading to a Barlow strike and his second goal of the match and a 3-1 lead in the 53rd minute. The pressure continued, as the Crew couldn't move the ball out of their half of the field for long stretches at a time. SLSG brought in fresh legs for the final 15 minutes, leading to a fourth goal off of a cross with the ball bouncing around the box before finding its way into the net for the 4-1 final.

"The second half really showed our determination and desire to win this tournament," said Leonard after the victory. The boys are doing the little things for each other, and it's a pleasure to work with all of them. They are a smart and mature group of young men."

The win has solidified SLSG MO's place in its group, with six points and a goal differential of +6 after two matches. PA Classics, who SLSG MO defeated earlier this week 3-0, sits in second place with three points and a goal differential of -2. With their final round robin match scheduled for this Saturday at 9:00PM vs. DC United, SLSG MO is in a strong position to advance to the Championship match on Monday night at the BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, which will be streamed live at ussoccer.com.
